5 Factors to consider when selecting a nursing school.

If you are reading this, you must be knee-deep in researching how to get a quality program. You must be asking yourself several questions like: what should I be looking for in a nursing school? How do I know I've landed a quality nursing school?

Well, you are prudent to wonder, as landing a top-notch nursing school sets a strong foundation for the rest of your career in nursing. Here are some tips and tricks that will help in making the process less daunting.

Accreditation

Choose a nursing school that has been authorized by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) to operate. Remember, a thick line between an institution getting approval from the state board and being accredited by a national accrediting board. Accreditation means that the institution has been reviewed and approved by specialists in the field.

NCLEX exam pass rate.

This will help you assess how well the nursing school prepares its students. The recommended pass rate of students should be around 80%. If the pass rate goes anywhere below 80%, steer clear of the nursing school. Always look back at least 4year's worth of data.

Degree choice

Decide whether you want an RN degree, or you want to start practicing as an LPN. Some nursing schools have incorporated all nursing training levels while others haven't. Most nurses prefer to begin with LPN training and then move on to associate degree. Once they are done with these milestones, they move on to the following degree, one at a time, until they attain their goals. With this plan, they can start earning an income early. Others prefer an associate degree since it takes a shorter time than a bachelor's. Be sure to check out the financial implications before making a decision.

Class schedules and class size

Is the class schedule put in place convenient for you? How many clinical hours are available every day, and is the training time available enough to prepare you as you go out into the workforce? Do you like the personal feel and close attention of a small school, or are you for a larger school type?

Pay close attention to the student-faculty ratio and the number of students admitted per semester. Several nursing schools only provide simulated labs to teach, but you want to go for one that gives you hands-on practice and with real people. This is what molds the patient-caregiver relationship. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. You'll be working side by side with an experienced nurse.
